About Us

AWARE-NS is the Nova Scotia Health &
Community Services Safety Association

Since 2009, AWARE-NS has played a pivotal role in advancing workplace safety across Nova Scotia’s health and community services sectors. Professionals working in the community and health care sectors face a higher risk of workplace injuries, both physical and psychological, than any other occupational group (WCB Nova Scotia, 2024).

As one of the province’s leading organizations for occupational health and safety education, AWARE-NS provides training, resources, and advocacy to empower employees and employers alike. Our team of Occupational Health and Safety Advisors brings a wealth of specialized education and hands-on expertise to help organizations create safer, more resilient workplaces.

AWARE-NS offers a range of evidence-informed programs tailored to the unique challenges of our sectors. From our innovative Safe Handling and Mobility framework to our proactive Workplace Violence Prevention and Psychological Safety initiatives, AWARE-NS supports organizations in building a culture of safety, accountability, and protection.

Our Occupational Health and Safety Advisors also support organizations by conducting comprehensive safety audits and providing expert guidance in developing and enhancing Safety Management Systems (SMS) that meet, and often exceed, industry standards.

Together with our valued collaborators, including Workers’ Compensation Board Nova Scotia, Department of Labour Skills and Immigration, Health and Community Care Workforce Sector Council, Nursing Homes of Nova Scotia Association, Nova Scotia Community Living Options, and many more, AWARE-NS works to build safe and healthy workplaces for Nova Scotians.
